Linkedin Comment Matt and Lauren Chandler talk about dating and guarding your heart. The Village Church leader told singles it is a “good, right desire” to “guard your heart” in dating relationships, noting that the phrase comes from scripture. However he warned there is a fine line between taking it slow and being deceptive in order to win a person.

Chandler explained, “There’s a legitimacy to guarding our hearts but I think we can guard too much and we can guard to the place where then we almost become used car salesmen … what I’m trying to say is all we want to do is point to the best things and we don’t want to go, ‘now this has been an issue historically, or this. Is it centered on gaining this person? Or on, you know, ‘oh I just want to be married,’ or whatever it is?

I provide counseling for couples, families, and individuals from a Christian perspective. But, it’s become clear to me over many years of working with husbands and wives who are struggling in their relationships, that the stronger their focus on God’s plan for the marriage, the more powerful and positive the outcome of therapy. Sometimes, couples have just “forgotten” what they know the Bible teaches about the marriage relationship and sometimes they never really knew or understood it in the first place.

In either case, Scripture is, as one might expect, the best guide to restoring marital harmony. After all, the relationship was great in the beginning in most cases. Sometimes it’s hard to tell where the past ends and the present begins. Therapy can allow you to become what I call a “thoughtful responder” rather than someone who impulsively reacts to current situations in ways dictated by negative past experiences.

By applying a counseling approach that is biblically-based and focused on practical solutions, I can help you to deal much more effectively with difficult people and situations in your life.

Thomas, also strongly promoted by Rick Warren, has several popular books covering topics such as marriage, parenting, and spirituality. Unfortunately, he is a proponent of contemplative prayer. In his book, Sacred Pathways, Thomas instructs readers: It is particularly difficult to describe this type of prayer in writing, as it is best taught in person. In general however, centering prayer works like this: Choose a word Jesus or Father, for example as a focus for contemplative prayer.

Repeat the word silently in your mind for a set amount of time say, twenty minutes until your heart seems to be repeating the word by itself, just as naturally and involuntarily as breathing. Thomas favorably references Oliver several times throughout Sacred Marriage and also references Oliver on his website in a Sacred Marriage study guide http:

Controversy[ edit ] Anthropologist Helen Fisher in What happens in the dating world can reflect larger currents within popular culture. For example, when the book The Rules appeared, it touched off media controversy about how men and women should relate to each other, with different positions taken by New York Times columnist Maureen Dowd [58] and British writer Kira Cochrane of The Guardian. Sara McCorquodale suggests that women meeting strangers on dates meet initially in busy public places, share details of upcoming dates with friends or family so they know where they’ll be and who they’ll be with, avoid revealing one’s surname or address, and conducting searches on them on the Internet prior to the date.

Don’t leave drinks unattended; have an exit plan if things go badly; and ask a friend to call you on your cell phone an hour into the date to ask how it’s going. If you explain beautifully, a woman does not look to see whether you are handsome or not — but listens more, so you can win her heart. That is why I advise our boys to read stories and watch movies more and to learn more beautiful phrases to tell girls.

The Internet is shaping the way new generations date.

Tweet Where the Singles Are Let’s examine the pros and cons of the most common ways to meet singles. Keep in mind, however, that no one proven way exists to find a good person to date. The key is to use all of the options at your disposal. The Church The local church is an excellent place to meet attractive, mature, Christian singles. It is one of the few locations where singles with possibly the same beliefs and interests as yours regularly gather.

Essentially, all you have to do is show up, become involved, and get to know people. A large church can be especially helpful if it has a singles ministry. The large size of some church congregations might seem intimidating. Therefore, you may feel inclined to visit just the worship service and then go home. However, you limit your opportunity to meet singles if you take such a narrow approach.

The best way to break into a large singles group is to get involved in their activities.
